Ongoing Haute Couture Coverage at PAPERMAG Fashion Schmashion

Bonjour mes lapins! It's official: I have finally landed in Paris after what can only be described as a "colorful" Air France flight – be sure to bunnyhop over to PAPERMAG for the downlow on my slightly nerve-racking (and in hindsight, rather laughable) "FRAKES ON A PLANE!" saga – to once again report on the Haute Couture shows for Paper's Fashion Schmashion.

While reluctantly tucked away toute seule dans ma chambre with a less-than-glamorous bout of food poisoning contracted en route to Paris, I was begrudgingly forced to forgo my beau bow amour Alexis Mabille and the master Armani Privé's presentations as well as cancel tea with Cobrasnake and Alie  of Dirrty Glam at Colette. I was, however, buoyantly cheered by the arrival of these two Hippolyte garden bunnies thoughtfully dispatched to me by Hôtel le Bristol's legendarily kindhearted staff.

This superbly silky-soft velveteen rabbit is really all the rage! Little Lucas Portman – flanked by his mum, Natalia Vodianova and dad, Justin Portman – proudly totes bunny buddy Hippolyte (named after the hotel's founder Hippolyte Jammet). Many thanks to Amy Bramley (Executive Director of The Naked Heart Foundation) for informing me of the charity's recent website makeover. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the new site and the foundation's magnanimous work!

Apropos of nothing, I recently received a number of surprising and flattering e-mails with regard to my choice beauty products and toiletries. Well, I am a bit of a purest (it's actually a rare feat to even espy me wearing any makeup) but I do have a few go-to cruelty-free products that I use semi-daily. So while unpacking earlier yesterday I zippily snapped a few shots to test out my new USB cord before the shows. Shown above are my favorite shampoo, conditioner, facial cleanser, facial moisturizer, body soap, hand/body cream, perfume, the one hair product that I can tolerate, and a free sample airport security safe purse-size hand cream thrown in for good measure.

Still Speechless After a Morning with Alber

obviously it would have been precarious to take photos, so here is the "public" invitation
illustrations by Alber; silly stickers by your bunny (quite the ahhhrteeest, non?)

Women simply adore Alber Elbaz (and by extension, Lanvin) owing to his love and appreciation of real women: sans the plastic or pretension. It was an absolute dream to spend Monday morning with him – quite candidly my favorite designer of our era – and Mr. Mickey exploring the showstopping Lanvin Spring 2009 collection (with a few previously unseen Cruise 2009 gems thrown in for good measure)!

Lanvin Spring 2009*

As per usual, comfort was of cardinal priority throughout the design process. Even the seemingly 'structured' garments felt lighter than a feather on the skin: a truly remarkable feat bearing in mind the weighty heft of similarly shaped Giambattista Valli frocks

The kooky throwback resort garments (think more "contemporary" items like t-shirts emblazoned with Alber's whimsical sketches not unlike the invitation above) were reasonably priced considering their handiwork, style level, and refined fabrication; while the Acne Jeans collaboration was the epitome of 'cool kid meets easy breezy chic' [below]:

Lanvin Cruise 2009 [also feat. Acne line] with Suzy Menkes

About 70% of the bags were entirely vegan – perhaps stemming from his dear kinship with fellow Israeli Natalie Portman or a reworking of F/W 2008's cruelty-free (by default) ribbon motif – the most electrifying of which sprang from Spring 2009's interludes of vibrant leopards, insane new crystal studded versions of last season's cult shapes, and Cruise 2009's Elbaz-doodled beach totes with PVC handles.

Ogling Alber's deco-gone-glam jewelry and flossy flossy bedazzled heels was pure sensory overload:

And yes, Alber is that twinkling and warmhearted in person! I did feel slightly maladroit since I had just broken one of his F/W 2008 bags* in a taxi door earlier that morning and hastily replaced the stunning Jeanne Lanvin charms with little bunnies from a quaint shop in Pennsylvania found deep within the recesses of said bag. He didn't seem to mind...

bunny BISOUS,
xx jules

If you're in Gotham Tuesday or Wednesday be sure to stop by Barney's 2nd floor on Madison & 61st. See invitation [above] for details. To my knowledge Alber will not be in store again – but his all-embracing, voluptuous, fresh-from-the-runway frocks will!

*Total major coincidence: many thanks to Tim Blanks (brilliant host of the style.com videos, including the one at top) for helping me find the then-new black Lanvin bag lost in the kerfuffle of Ikram's annual post-McQueen Indian fête. By now that bag must be on its ninth life!

Keira's Got a Brand Old Bag

Bunny obsesh! Keira Knightley has been seen all about Gotham donning a very Annie Hall (bygone season) rust Prada messenger sack.

While her beloved bag may no longer be on the market, to procure a similar vintagey accountement try the Marc Jacobs flower shoulder bag, Prada nappa ruffled tote, or Tila March papillion shoulder bag on for size. For my fellow ethical vegans -- try scooping up Stella's take on the newsboy rucksack for an akin 70's Barnard vibe.

Fancy her black-tipped Chanel ballerinas [at right]? Scope them out (among racks and racks of serious fashion schmashion fabuloulosity from Mr. Mickey, Charlotte Ronson, Peter Davis, Emma Snowdon-Jones, Star von Bunny, and me -- erm, Julia Frakes) tomorrow at the first annual Celebrity Charity Sidewalk Sale at Screaming Mimi's!

All proceeds go to charity : waterScott Harrison's lifesaving non-profit foundation bringing clean and sanitary drinking water to people in developing nations.

Rochas, J. Mendel, Max Mara, Chanel, Mickey's flossy flossy sparklyhood... there's really no excuse not to make a cameo for the cause (credit card in-hand)!

See you there!

PS: It's common knowledge that Keira is not only strikingly alluring but also brilliantly perspicacious; nonetheless her appearance on Charlie Rose (in a 3.1 Phillip Lim blue asymmetrical fan dress and Wren contrast-lined blazer) truly set it in stone. Enjoy!

Bunny Inspiration: Seriously Chic Oversized Jackets All Year 'Round

Love this look. I could seriously wear big blazers on the daily: any time of year, any occasion, any weather. Easy breezy!

oversize jacket [inspiration] collage

Bloated? Blazer. Chilly? Blazer. Falafel stain? Blazer!

Stefano Pilati offers his sleek French take on the YSL signature masculin blazer, quite au contraire to Peter Jensen and Swaim & Christina Hutson's [of Obedient Sons & Daughters] ragamuffin panache.

On the academic front Paulo Melim Andersson [formally of Chloé] gave a decidedly studenty approach to the oversize jacket, while Chris Benz took it a step further with a very Berkeley circa '77 flair.

Maggie et les Chiens

Maggie Adore Les Chiens

Maggie Rizer and boyfriend Alex Mehran are on the lookout for an airy, glass-enclosed ground floor West Village space. No, they're not nudist exhibitionists or anything! The couple intends to open a 3,000 square foot doggy day care center & spa in early Autumn 2008 to pamper both people and their pooches (or, rather, vice-versa).

Rizer and Mehran have conceptualized an Apple Store-esque décor (think glass galore with a bright, open aura) to enable clients and pedestrians alike gawking privileges of les chiens mignons. Plus, there's always a certain comfort level to actually witnessing the goings-ons of such establishments (open kitchens in restaurants tend to be of the same credo). Maggie's father, Kevin O'Dea Rizer, raised golden retrievers and she has two of her own. "They're like my children," Maggie recently related to WWD.

Maggie is currently in production of Maggie and Me, directed by Alexandra Kerry (daughter of Senator John Kerry). The film explores the immense importance of a youth-initiated, cross-cultural, and global partnership in the fight against AIDS. Maggie's openly gay father Kevin died of AIDS and she has since wholeheartedly dedicated herself to HIV awareness.

bunny BISOUS Exclusive: Simona McIntyre Interview

Exclusive Interview Collab: Artwork by Alice Lancaster

Are there any historic figures that you profoundly identify with?

“Actually, I think so. Since I was about 7 years old I began to idolize Pocahontas. I have plenty of memories (and family home videos haha) of me in her Disney apparel, day in and out, barefoot and singing Colors of the Wind. I recall channeling her, reminding those I saw to respect nature and of universal love. Whether or not the romanticized version of Pocahontas that I envisioned based on the Disney idol is the real Powhatan doesn't matter. To me she always represented my love and respect for every life form in the physical macrocosm.”

What makes you laugh uncontrollably?

“Nothing in particular. I should just laugh more anyways. I am usually pretty serious.”

How would you describe your personal style?

“My personal style has been changing considerably since I started playing in the fashion business. I am guilty of resorting to comfort clothes at times, wearing the same cashmere sweater, but I like a feel of sophistication and femininity in my clothing. I love more womanly clothes especially wardrobes inspired by styles around the 1930's. Clothing felt more elegant, romantic and delicate. Style preferences change, but I always feel in my element when I take pieces I like and make it my own. I really love how fashion is so expressive.”

What are your last thoughts prior to stepping out onto the runway?
MARC JACOBS S/S 2008 bunny BISOUS

“No thoughts really. That is what I think I like best about the runway, being able to perform is something that puts you in the moment. Thoughts and noise go away, you really get to live what you are doing.”

What is your most prized value in others?

Sincerity.”

What is your most prized value in yourself?

“The two questions go hand-in-hand. What I look for most in others is what should have as a prominent quality in myself.”

What do you consider to be your “big break”?

“I had a long, quiet interest in modeling. Having Chantale [Nadeau] discover me would have to be my biggest break so far. I consider myself new and only making small waves at this time. I don't have any major covers or opened shows yet. Chantale really helped get my image out there at the beginning. With her I was able to break in and get an amazing agency, and have her as an amazing mentor. At a good pace I am being able to do with modeling what I want. I still thank her for continuing to be there and constantly helping step up my career and potential.”

Do you believe in luck?

“I believe everything has a place in the universe; a potential and a path. Things will happen as they do, but it sure feels lucky when they are good! Luck is a power of attraction. Therefore, I like to think I am lucky. I most certainly feel blessed.”

Do you prefer runway, campaign, or editorial work?
Simona McIntyre

“They are apples and oranges to me. When a show or a shoot has lots of talent as well as an organized production I feel like I enjoy my work environment the most.”

What do you least admire about the fashion industry?

“I do not like how everything is so unknown. There is never a yes or no, a black or white. It is the most fickle job I could imagine at times. You really just have to learn to roll with it.”

What have you learned about yourself through this no doubt challenging work?

“Just the same, I learn more through myself by my trials. I feel like a homebody at heart. I love to have a set life to cook, clean, sleep, shower, workout etc. all in a somewhat scheduled manner. I like my control, haha. Well, despite my more critical nature this job gets me out of my shell. I equally love new things, I am not all that serious! I have been able to grow as a person when I am out my comfort zone. Traveling all the time and having no concept of tomorrow can be easily perceived as stress. Work provides the opportunity to master the art of decompressing and ultimately learn more about myself.”

How do you keep yourself occupied while traveling?
bunny BISOUS

“I spend a good amount of time reading and playing crossword puzzles when I wish to enjoy the time. More than doing something "entertaining" I often find myself either thinking about issues, joys, dreams etc., and then to the opposite, not thinking. Traveling feels stressful at times so I feel the need to decompress quite often. Focusing on breathing, for example, makes me feel better.”

Is it difficult to find vegetarian options while traveling abroad? How do you - in the words of Tim Gunn - “make it work”?
Simona McIntyre

“I do not focus on what I can and cannot eat. There are a large variety of commodities sold that wouldn't interest me as food, processed products and meats alike. After many years without animal foods I recently transitioned to eating fish and eggs to enhance my diet. The lack of animal foods in my life became a threat to my health. My reason for eating vegan wasn't about killing animals. I feel both plants and animals have life, either way I am going to respect the life that I consume for my own. I traditionally prepare everything I eat in a day myself to eat organic and sustainable foods, save money and ultimately know that I am going to enjoy my meal. Getting fresh foods is hard, but without them I know I don't feel my best. I usually have a lunch kit on me. There still are great restaurants that serve a menu of organic and sustainable foods, but on a working day it is very useful to have my homemade goodies to keep my day rolling.”

Besides an organic diet, how do you maintain your radiant complexion? Do you have a specific beauty ritual?
bunny BISOUS

“Simply balance. Maintaining a good relationship with important things in life (family, myself, friends, food, organics, water, sleep, sport) takes credit for radiance in my life. My best beauty rituals are the ones that contribute to my happiness. Meditating is great! I am able to reflect inward and change perception. I feel more connected to everything around me. That glows. A good relationship with life works.

Are you an avid cook?

“Am I ever! A subject of great interest to me is Food Politics. I have a great interest in the reaching impacts of food in society, which I find in America seems to be a symptomatic lack of. Food has become such a commodity. I love gardening, whole foods and greatly promote a real relationship with the things that sustain us in life. I have a great respect for the whole things I eat. Cooking and actively living "green" make me feel more connected to everything that is alive. Being so passionate about it I can see myself in the future making a greater impact on societies dwindling relationship with such an important thing.”

What is your favorite meal of the day?

“Perhaps lunch. I usually eat the most around midday and the afternoon. Recently I am having a big thing for anything to match with avocados. I know I like to eat local but I love those suckers! Can't win them all I suppose.”

Exclusive Interview Collab: Artwork by Alice Lancaster

You come across as an extraordinary independent learner; is there anything that you have learned through your work that would have otherwise been impossible to discover in the classroom?

“I never felt like I have learnt anything great in a classroom. It is true that I have always been a more independent learner, going through my notes and understanding concepts on my own. That aside, classroom studies do not teach emotional intelligence or street smarts. I work in a business where I am a baby in comparison to most of my coworkers. I have an opportunity to learn about and experience life, and mature more in a real world. It is fast paced but a great ride overall.”

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

“I am just proud of how much I feel like I am improving as a person the more I get into this. With or without this job I would develop no doubt, but modeling has provided opportunities that a 'regular' life could never offer. I feel like I have achieved so much in learning from and accomplishing what I set out for each day.”

Do you ascribe to a particular life philosophy?

“Simply put, balance.”

Are there any organizations that are close to your heart?
bunny BISOUS

“I am supportive of organizations such as local farmers markets, boutique grocers and stores on a daily basis. I am not part of any foundations in particular but simply supporting and living a lifestyle that is sustainable matters to me. If I lived in one location I would love subscribe to a local CSA for example, but alas I am on a plane almost weekly. How contradictory. The airlines I fly claim to be ‘greener’.”

What do you consider to be the most widespread misconception about models?

“I get asked two questions the most, 'So you are like America's Next Top Models?' and 'Do you get to eat food?' No comment. I hope the answers are obvious enough, haha.”

A very sincere thank you to the delightful & beautiful Simona for taking valuable time out of her teeming (and fascinating) schedule- as well as for her exceptionally heartfelt, astute responses!

Julia Lapin Loves Vegan Jellies (Shoes and Otherwise)

Julia Lapin Loves Vegan Jellies!

Finally a key shoe trend for Spring that's actually vegan! No surprise then that your little bunny friend stocked up for Summer.
A few faves:

Marni

I picked up these super refreshing animal-friendly Marni flats in Philadelphia at Joan Shepp Boutique. Also available in titanium.

It goes without saying that I'm a total tofu-ham when it comes to Marni accessories, so imagine my glee at the opening of Consuelo Castiglioni's first-ever accessories boutique in Milan!

Givenchy

Pretty Fierce in pink. These brilliant little Givenchy numbers simultaneously fulfill two au courant essentials: gladiators and jellies. The soft pink pastel softens up an otherwise hard-edged mode; however if Roman is your forté then be sure to give the black hue a once-over.

Marc Jacobs

These adorable Lolita-esque jelly mouse flats are almost too comfortable! Easily dressed up or down, you'll want to wear them on the daily. Plus, they're available in more delicate, translucent shades. But take heed! They run über big: like a whole (not half) size big. Just FYI...

Bunny Quote du Jour [Countdown to Earth Day Edition]: Shalom Harlow

"I'm also really interested in living a simple, natural life. Maybe being a sheep farmer and producing [my] own textiles off in the woods somewhere. So, we'll see... I might end up there in a few years."
- Shalom Harlow to Tonne Goodman:

Model citizen Shalom sits down (on the floor) with Domino and generously offers indispensable earth-friendly advice. So get your bamboo notebooks handy and take note!

You moved to Manhattan from Ontario. Has it been hard being eco in the Big Apple? You don't have to live in the country and grow your own food to be green. I discovered there are lots of things about a big city that are really green: population density, fewer cars and more mass transit (meaning less carbon emissions). But initially, I longed for more outdoor spaces.

Any of your country ways translate to city living?
I've recently started composting in my apartment, which is quite an adventure. There's a Japanese system called the Bokashi (scdworld.com). You cut up your table scraps and add a special mixture that speeds the breakdown process. Compost makes houseplants very happy.

What's in your closet?
Anna Cohen's edgy organic fiber separates. Crisp pieces from Noir. Linda Loudermilk jeans and baby-doll dresses. Yummy cashmere from Stuart + Brown, all made by Mongolians living in their traditional way.

Paper or plastic—or neither?
Paper, if I've forgotten to bring my own bag. I have a grocery tote that's made from recycled rice bags (geckotraders.com).

What are some small changes we could make?
Two easy things: Switch to CFLs, which use about 25 percent of the energy of an incandescent lightbulb; and if you're going to take home a doggy bag, ask for the food to be wrapped in tinfoil, which you can reuse. And, of course, buy local whenever possible. Remember, when you order online, it's not free shipping for the planet!

Ideal green date?
An afternoon at Storm King, a sculpture museum in the Hudson Valley, and a meal at nearby Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which has a working farm). Of course, we'd drive there in a hybrid....

Would you date a guy who owns a Hummer?
I don't want to discriminate, but I can't imagine being attracted to someone with those values.

How do you avoid seeming preachy?
Nobody responds to being made to feel judged—I know I'd get defensive. It's about bringing awareness to topics someone hasn't considered. When my boyfriend and I started dating, he would buy two things at the deli and bring them home in a plastic bag. One day, I said, "Maybe you don't want to take the bag?" Just a little adapting can mean less plastic in a landfill.

Fave cleaning product?
Citra-Solv is a natural, nontoxic Mr. Clean. It's that good! And it smells delicious.

What websites do you have bookmarked?
idealbite.com They have a newsletter that focuses on one thing each day—today it was recycled card companies. It's always smart, savvy and upbeat.
treehugger.com Of course. vivavi.com Great source for green furniture. The Signature 1.0 bamboo console is beautiful.

Your Bunny is Bananas for...

Starbucks® ORGANIC Sumatra-Peru Blend:
This bunny can barely get off of her cruelty-free pillow in the morning without some freshly french-pressed coffee. I eat practically 100% organically, but I've always made an exception when it came to Starbuckles. Their previous organic blends were so mightily mild, not even major Bodum pressage could make it kick! Forget their au courant Pike Place Blend, this Organic Sumatra-Peru Blend is where it's at. Those crazy Starbuckles gurus have dreamt up the boldest, most complex mélange of intensely rich beans from Sumatra and Peru. Zing!

Diane von Furstenburg Vegan "Go Green" Canvas Tote:
Madame von Furstenburg herself designed an Intermix-exclusive, certified organic cotton "Go Green" tote to toast Miami's last Art Basel non-stop soirée and occasional art exhibition. Every last detail of the cruelty-free bag was devised by Diane, including her signature in the lower right-hand corner and a handwritten note in the bag's interior commanding us to "Save and Love the Planet" - can't you just hear her in that sultry, American Express commercial-esque voice?
