Your bunny's beloved Louis Boston ("Loooeeez Baahsten") will be relocating from its esteemed Newberry Street institution in Boston's former Natural History Museum. Louis brought a certain kooky, offbeat panache to the now thoroughly mainstream fashion street.
The artsy independent department store often store often draws comparisons to Barneys New York for its akin fostering of up-and-coming designers including Brian Reyes, Elise Øverland, Lyn Devon, and Olga Kapustina as well as offbeat labels like Dries Van Noten, Jonathan Saunders, Nathen Jenden, and Marni; innovative in-store restaurant; and venerated home and fragrance departments boasting Costes, Diptyque, and Fornasetti.
Owner Debi Greenberg has long been apprehensive of Newberry's slow and steady homogenization. The final straw came with a proximate office building's revamp into a Victoria's Secret and Filene's Basement Outlet. Despite Louis' close quarters to Burberry, Chanel, and Valentino, Greenberg is looking to migrate southbound to either the Seaport District or the South End, a milieu ripe with burgeoning boutiques and the culinary hub of Boston's flourishing restaurant scene.
Louis Boston will remain in their illustrious mainstay -- which they originally overhauled in '88 -- until their lease expires in spring 2010. In all likelihood Newberry-bound shoppers in search of a luxe medley of lines will alternately flock to super-haute Serenella just down the street.
Bummer. Perusing habiliments in a (bygone) museum is about as cerebral as shopping gets!
